Description
This page will be used to keep family, friends, coworkers and loved ones informed on the diagnoses and treatment of Brian J Hansen's lung cancer.

December 18, 2010
Dad returns home from a business trip to Thailand with a light shallow cough.

January 16, 2011
While on a family vacation to Las Vegas dad experiences sudden severe back pain and is bed ridden.

January 19, 2011
With the pain not getting better Dad travels home from Vegas setting up an appointment with the doctor for the next day.

January 20, 2011
The first inclination of the doctor is that dad may have kidney stones and a CT scan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full-body_CT_scan) is scheduled for the next day.

Friday, January 21, 2011
Dad has a CT scan and a pleural effusion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleural_effusion) is found around his left lung. The fluid around his lung is limiting his lung from expanding and shorting his breath. To drain the fluid a thoracentesis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thoracentesis) is preformed. Dad feels much better. The fluid is sent for testing, however, because it is a weekend test results won’t finish until Monday. Dad goes home.

Saturday, January 22, 2011
The short relief of having the fluid drained Friday had vanished. The pain returns as the fluid builds up again around dad’s left lung. Late that night mom decides to take dad to the Emergency Room to have the fluid drained. Doctors drain the fluid, and because of their concerns dad is admitted to the hospital. The ER doctors review his CT scan and after closer examination point out masses on dad’s left lung, liver and adrenal glands. For the first time cancer as a possibility is thrown out. A pulmonologist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulmonologist) and oncologist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oncologist) are called in to review the findings so far.

Monday, January 22, 2011
Results from the fluid drawn on Friday return, malignant cells (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malignant_cell) are found. Doctors tell us that the fluid comes from the cancer in his lungs. In trying to grow the cancer builds blood vessels, because of the weakness the blood vessels are breaking and releasing fluid between his lung and chest cavity. The oncologist explains that it is STAGE 4 Cancer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage-4_cancer). The doctor continues on stating that he believes the cancer started in his lung and that this type of cancer is terminal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_illness). The mortality rate for this type of cancer shows that out of 100 people 50 will die within 12 months. The news is shocking but the family resolves that we will make it past the year mark.

To prevent further fluid from building up a pleurodesis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleurodesis) is preformed to eliminate the space that the fluid is filling. A chest x-ray is done and shows that the lung is inflating well and adhering to his chest cavity as hoped. A chest drain is inserted to allow any fluids to drain as the lung continues to fuse to the chest cavity. In performing the pluerodesis biopsies of the lung are taken for a more detailed examination of exactly what type of cells the lung cancer is. The result from the biopsy is take at least a week.

  • Dad just came out of surgery. To stop the fluid building up around his left lung the surgeon has drained his lung and used talcum powder to fuse his lung to his chest cavity. So far it looks to be successful. We will know more as time goes on.
